Red Devils Share Points With Gold Coast

Sunday afternoon football returned to Cleveland when Redlands United played host to 2nd placed Gold Coast United at Compass Grounds in Round 18 of the NPL Men’s competition in a very entertaining game.  A goal to both teams in the 2nd half meant the competition points were shared.

Redlands were given an early scare as Goalkeeper Ryan Govan was forced to save a close range shot as Gold Coast moved the ball into the goal box before firing in a goal bound shot that Govan saved with his legs.

In a very tight affair the game moved from end to end with neither team really worrying the goalkeeper until a 5 minute spell from the Red Devils had Coast defending stoutly.

On 25 minutes Ryo Emoto’s shot was deflected over the crossbar, 2 minutes later Michael Lee’s top corner bound shot was tipped over by a diving keeper who also had to tip the resulting corner over the bar.  A good spell for the Red Devil’s but Gold Coast managed to keep the game locked at nil all.

Right on the brink of half time Coast stole the ball right on the back line.  The ball was crossed to the far post where the subsequent goal bound header was saved by young Govan, ensuring the teams went into the sheds on equal terms.

As the 2nd half commenced the game went from end to end in a entertaining contest, as both sides looked to attack at every opportunity.   It was Redlands who were on the scoreboard first when Fionn Reilly scored his 1st goal for the club.   A throw in from the middle of their own half was worked upfield through some great team play where Reilly out maneuvered his defenders to place the ball past the Keeper.

Redlands continued to press forward moving the ball around well, creating further half chances with Coast trying to make something happen at the other end.

On 72 minutes Gold Coast had their equalizer when from a free kick, out wide in line with the goal box, Jarrod Kyle out leapt the Redlands defense to head home Gold Coast’s goal.

The goal set up an exciting finish to the game as both sides continued to push forward seeking the winner but were continually denied.

As the game entered its final stages Redlands increased their efforts but Coast’s defense maintained their form.  Jack Skinner caused Coast problems all night and with a minute to go beat his defender out wide and chipped into the middle where Guil Santana’s header went just wide.  The game ended with Redlands pressing forward through Reilly, but the game ended 1-1 with the teams sharing a point each in an entertaining game at Compass Grounds.

Redlands’ Fiction Bar and Restaurant, Man of the Match was awarded to Redlands midfield maestro Jack Skinner for a strong attacking performance.

Next Saturday afternoon Redlands are at home again as we host Sunshine Coast Wanderers.   Kick Off is at 3.15pm with the Under 23’s at 12.45pm.   This should be another blockbuster of a game.   Get your Red on and be there to support our Red Devils.
